Leveraging global virtual teams through intercultural
curiosity, sensitivity, and respect. Many of the
principles and theories used for traditional teams as
well as virtual teams are true for global virtual teams.
However, global virtual teams are further along the
continuum of time, distance, and space, and therefore,
are more complex. This intricacy introduces new
variables for effectiveness, such as intercultural
competence. A study conducted by the author[2]
determined that a team member's intercultural competence
(defined as being attuned to cultural differences)
strongly influences the degree of effectiveness of
global virtual teams, and that building relationships,
establishing structure, and having discipline are
critical for success. 2008
